Something Broke
01.09.2026
Something broke very loud
so loud that the birds flew in a pattern together from the mango tree.
The windowpane had a crack
that the sight of the beautiful mango tree outside I always looked at to soothe myself
got perplexed into two.
I looked everywhere what it could be
but I did not succeed
but, this was too loud to be ignored
so I must look deeper and wider and so did I.
Now I opened the cellar, the attic, the storage boxes, my bicycle tyres, even asked my neighbours.
what could such a loud sound be?
Everything seems to work just fine except for this one thought within me: ‘something broke’.
I looked at the crack of the window and followed it, measured it, but nothing proved anything.
The fear grew wider and patience thinner.
Discomfort showered me generously as if I did a big favour earlier.
My hands are cold now and weary my mind.
My head feels bloated and thinking limited within boundaries.
foggy
mute
colourless
but,
the sound was loud, I am sure.
I am sure that something broke
and I don’t know what?
It does not sound like all the fifteen windowpanes that I broke as a child,
nor does it sound like the drinking glasses I broke last year
neither like the mobile phones that I threw against the living room wall
not like the mechanical keyboard that I punched and broke either.
this was a crystal-clear sound of something breaking.
The sun dips into the horizon while I was pondering on these thoughts.
I lit a candlelight.
The outside view gently disappeared and I saw what was broken in the window’s reflection.
