Something broke very loud
so loud that the birds flew in a pattern together from the mango tree.
The windowpane had a crack that the sight of the beautiful mango tree outside I always looked at to soothe myself got perplexed into two.

I looked everywhere what it could be
but I did not succeed
but, this was too loud to be ignored
so I must look deeper and wider and so did I.
Now I opened the cellar, the attic, the storage boxes, my bicycle tyres, even asked my neighbours.

About

‘Disenchantment of a Pentagram’ is my final project for the M.A. Scenography and Communication programme at FH Dortmund. My written thesis was on the history and identity within the black metal scene and is titled ‘The meandering human identity and local mythology’. In the thesis, I have connected the various influences of black metal music and the branches taken from the local heritage. The theme I have chosen for the colloquium is black metal subculture and its various impacts on contemporary society. The focus is on the atmosphere created both visually and sonically in the space. To achieve this, I have composed a black metal track and performed it as a one-member band, which is also a typical attribute of many black metal acts.

Finding metal music in the villages of Kerala, India was not an easy task in the 90’s. A connection to larger cities or music magazines obtained from distant sources were required to have contact with this genre. I was introduced to extreme metal music when I was 13 years old while visiting my cousin in the big city of Mumbai, very far away from my village. I could not understand how music could be so “noisy”, heavy and textured, but something about this music was in harmony with me. I returned to the village with a metal CD compilation given to me by my cousin. Back in the village, I had to travel 110 kilometres to get to the nearest music shop in the city that had an international music section. Very often they did not have any extreme-metal genre, and had to pick what they had to offer, not leaving much room for choice. Accessing music via internet was an absurd process with a 64 kbps dial-up modem. However, lyrics were looked up using the available internet sources and were handwritten in a book dedicated to metal lyrics. Travelling a hundred kilometres every three months to the city to buy metal music was not accepted by parents and had to be done with meticulous planning. The whole process was so real and was done with a lot of commitment in search of wanting to know more about this music and its culture.

Soundscape of Arattupuzha

I frequently visited Arattupuzha, a village in southern India, until I was 17 years old to meet my friend Shiraz. We have known each other for over twenty-five years now. I grew up in the nearest village called Karthikappally. The journey took approximately half an hour by bus at that time. I imagine that it would be different now, considering the staggering number of vehicles on the road. Spending time in Arattupuzha was an absolute delight, and the feeling has not changed so much until now. The escape to the countryside reduced the need to constantly feed the intellect with sugar bites in exchange for communion with nature, evoking states of unity.

It was in the year 2009, while I was studying art at the College of Fine Arts in Bangalore, that I met Nishchith Moses. We discovered each other’s musical interests rather quickly while spending time at the sculpture department and even more in the canteen, where we spent an enormous amount of time drinking chai, philosophising over existential philosophies and the lyrics of Nick Drake.

Soon enough, we started to meet at my place frequently after school to jam. All I had as an instrument was a very cheap electric guitar and plenty of VSTs to crank it up. My computer at that time was breaking apart in all its glory. It sent out low-voltage electric charges into the guitar strings and the rest of the metal parts. To avoid discomfort, one had to wear a shoe or not touch the ground while playing the guitar. Truthfully and without fail, Old Monk, the very old vatted rum (at least on the label), accompanied us on this creative journey.

Connection to the Australian Aborigines

A few years ago, I became really fascinated by the music of the Australian Aborigines. Their traditional music has a very strong sense of rhythm. This is also the case with most of the music from the ancient cultures, and it was always connected to something that was bigger than themselves. This music felt very close to me, even though I had never listened to it before. Maybe it was because of the structure of folk music in South India, which also has a strong sense of rhythm. The interesting part of this discovery was that it was not an audible but a visual one.

Recycled Paper Book [2015]

This book was a result of the work done together with the residents of Friends of Camphill India in the paper workshop. It would not have been possible to do this without the joint collaboration of these wonderful people.

All the papers in the book are made using recycled paper, which comes from the office of the community. The whole process is done only by hand and with low-tech but very stable techniques and tools. The paper used as the outer cover is bought ready-made from a local shop.

Transition II - A Field Recording Composition

Transition II is a collage of sounds collected over the past 4 years. It covers the country-scape of eastern Norway to the city-scape of western Germany. Like in my other compositions using field recordings, the transition from one situation to the other is the focus. In this piece, most of the sounds recorded in Norway are mainly from the everyday life of an ecological community and the city of Oslo.

Head Splash came into existence in 2011 quite spontainously after five grindcore fans gathered together one fine afternoon on the outskirts of Bangalore, in the southern part of India. I was only part of these first few songs and did not continue the project while Clifford and Charlie went on making further pieces. These tracks here became a part of the CD compilation released called Retards Lullaby which I was unaware of until recently.

This event took place over a video call, which resulted in a live broadcast of the skies from different parts of the world. A total of 17 different cities from 6 different countries (Mexico, Germany, USA, Turkey, India, and Thailand) were sharing a piece of their sky at the same time.

For the after-party, I played a piece on the modular system live over Zoom for the participants at the end of the day.

An audio-visual piece that emerged during the beginning of 2021. This piece was premiered on the pulse channel (YT) during the Pulse spring event.

‘Blind’ was inspired by the resolution of a feeling I had in the early months of 2021. All of life’s tangible organic parts were abruptly overwhelmed by the digital reality that had followed for a long time. Under the umbrella of the chaos and fear that is prevailing in the society, the digital reality kept its foot firm and tight on the ground. What are the consequences of these shifts ? Do we ever experience the world anymore without the romantic sense of past lurking around ? Would it lead to new revolution shifting the existing paradigm? Would it ‘blind’ those unique senses of human beings, which otherwise was in use ?

Wish you were here is an international workshop excursion for students from a handful of universities around the world. In 2021, this happened online due to the complications of organising it in real life.

The theme for this year was to form different groups and create an audio/visual piece that could be performed online. I and Johanna Hendrike performed this piece together on Zoom. I played the music in Bochum DE while Johanna interacted with her surroundings in Mannheim DE, synchronising the sound and visuals.

Session musician for I is Another directed by Lars Øyno for Grusomhetens Teater in Oslo NO. The theatre was invited to take part in 12th the International Theater Festival of Kerala, India in 2020. The original musician Lars Tore Pedersen who composed the music for the play could not join the team to travel to India therefore I replaced him.

Dobro Project is an audio-visual performance event initiated by the Norwegian actor and musician Miguel E.D. Steinsland. ‘Nature i Veien’ (Nature in the way) is one of the sub-projects branching out from Dobro. I worked with Miguel on this project for a year in 2019. We have performed at Veien Kulturminnepark, Hønefoss and at the Regeneration Festival at Teateret in Kristiansand, Norway. We have also collaborated with the Norwegian ornithologist Anne Gri Henriksen.

About the track

For me, this piece reflects the moment of detachment from attaining perfection, the play between the analog and digital worlds. To achieve that, while composing the track, I used an analog wall clock as a metronome and played percussion over it, while the rest of the track followed a digital metronome of the Digtal Audio Workstation, which was set to the same tempo as the wall clock. This resulted in the wall clock following the metronome for a brief moment and taking its own course in time.

Face casts of all the residents and co-workers living at Friends of Camphill, India in the year of 2015. These masks were hung in a circular form at varying heights from the ceiling of Panchanga, the meeting room of the community

The idea of Floating Souls was conceived together with Francis Aradya, the coordinator of the community. This was executed later on as a group project and was only made possible with the kind help and support of all the residents and co-workers living there.

Helix is my first sculpture in stone. This work was made while studying at the College of Fine Arts. The stone used in this work comes from Mysore, a neighboring state of Bangalore, India, where the art school is located. This is also my first try at the substractive process (as apposed to clay’s additive process) of approaching a sculptural material.

This work was made without the help of any power-tools.

The Valley school in Bangalore is surrounded by forest. In 2011, they noticed that one particular species of tree surrounding the valley had started to grow over the other varieties, blocking the sunlight source for the shorter ones. The school employees, together with Prof. Baoni, came up with the solution to fell some of them and use them to make a large sculpture beside the art village on the premise of the valley school.
